There are so many brilliant sports data sets available online that someone should make a database just to track the databases (databi?). This is not one of those sites. All I’m trying to do here is take some of these brilliant data sets and add some visualization that makes them understandable and digestible. Second generation charting for second generation data.
I’ve been making charts for newspapers and magazines for the last 15 years — charts that track wars and diseases and natural disasters and school ratings and tax assessments. But rarely sports. I guess I was always worried that covering sports for a living would make sports less appealing as a weekend diversion. But I consume a lot of sports news and coverage and ultimately I always start thinking of new ways to show sports stats. So this is a perfect compromise: a little hobby, making a new interactive every now and then, presenting some historical posters (because sometimes you just have to see it printed out full-scale), pointing out good work when I see it, and letting you all contribute your own ideas.
The best graphics I’ve ever done have been collaborations, bouncing ideas off experts and colleagues. I’m excited about opening up that dialogue here. So please contribute any thoughts you have, or send me some data and we’ll share it with the world.
