Game Charts: Pro football

At long last the pro football game charts are live now.

A useful hidden feature, especially if you’re blogging about the NFL:
You can adjust the URL of the link to automatically load any individual game.

So the main link is this:

http://www.chartball.com/football/

It loads up the latest game played.

But you can call up, say, the latest Eagles game by adding the team id:
http://www.chartball.com/football/?team=PHI

Even better, you can call up a specific game by including the week and year:
http://www.chartball.com/football/?team=PHI_year=2008_week=17

(For wildcard games, make the week “WC”. Divisional round = “DV”. Conference Chamionships = “CC”.  Super Bowl = “SB”.)

Give it a try.

Launch countdown

It’s been a terrific week for Chartball, with lots of poster sales from some really supportive and passionate San Fran Giants fans. They’ve already overwhelmed the response from the Yankee’s championship a year ago. What’s up, Yankee fans? Too many championships got you down? A big thanks for all the support and also to our printers, who have kept up with orders without a hitch.

But we’re already moving toward our next exciting announcement. The football interactive charts are 90% ready, and I’m expecting to launch those sometime this week, or next at the latest. It’s still not a perfect data set, surely there are some existing bugs that I haven’t found yet. But I’m going to put it out there and let the good people of data land point out whatever they find. Here’s a sneak peak:

I’ll post more soon when we have a launch site.

Football Interactives

I’m finishing up the details on the interactive version of the football game charts, which will be pretty cool as a place to see the game story of every game, every week. Bascially it’s the same coding that creates the print chart, but you’ll be able to select any game and pull up the detail on any play you want to see.

There will still be some bugs that will pop up, some circumstances that the code hasn’t learned how to handle. But I’ll smooth those out as I find them.

Other things on the radar:
…Keeping one eye on the baseball playoffs. Would love to do a poster of this Phillies team — would equally hate to do another Yankees poster.
…I gotta find time before college basketball starts to update my Syracuse basketball score tracker. That thing is desperate for an upgrade.
…I’m setting up a Chartball twitter account to see if that scores me any decent traffic.

ChartBasketball

If you’re a fan of basketball or Syracuse or interactive charts, you might want to check out another exclusive Chartball creation. I’ve actually been producing this for a few years, a feature at a blog run by a bunch of good fellas that I know.

It charts the cumulative team scores for SU basketball games, tracking the lead throughout the course of the game. It’s not fed live, unfortuneately, but in it’s fourth season it sure provides a good bit of context and history. When SU dominates, it blazes orange. When not, a dull gray.

One of these days I’ll start thinking about college basketball posters. But for now, enjoy the interactive.

Interactive Hitting: Beta version

Here’s the interactive I’ve been working on for the last month. Shows Home Runs Vs. Strikeouts for every player and every team back to 1871. I think it’s pretty interesting when you spend time with it, lots of stories inside the data. There are still more than a few bugs to sort out, but I’m putting it up just to share.
