After a bit of a wait, the Chartball legal team has a verdict: We’re (probably) legal!
As I explained in a previous post, we were a little concerned that a team or a league might come after us for printing and distributing posters full of analytical sports charts. Trademark issues, publicity issues, etc. So we contacted the best guy in the business, the lawyer who went up against Major League Baseball defending the right of fantasy leagues to use sports statistics. He won that case on every count, and he assures us that our use of the team and player stats and names has some firm First Amendment protection. That doesn’t mean no one can try to shut us down, but it means that we’d have a good case to make in our defense.
So we’ll proceed as planned. I’ll unveil the poster prototype in a few days. I’ve got a couple tweaks to make before it’s ready to share.
